Maxence Mathieu s’intéresse aux espaces fictifs (rêves, projections mentales, réalités virtuelles …) et à leur manifestation dans la réalité. Son projet pour Art Public s’articule autour de l’intention d’insuffler un sentiment de doute aux usagers de la ville à travers la présence de vitrines affichant un avis à la population lequel suggère que tout événement se déroulant dans l’espace public durant l’exposition pourrait potentiellement être une œuvre d’art. En parallèle, un scénario tenu secret prévoit que des actions anodines par des comédiens prendront place en différents endroits de Bouillon tout au long de la manifestation, sans jamais qu’il soit précisé qu’il s’agit de saynètes. Ce projet trouve son origine dans l’observation de la ville : « Mes visites préparatoires ont catalysé l’imaginaire que je me faisais de Bouillon, explique Maxence Mathieu. Sa topographie encaissée avec des vues plongeantes évoque les gradins d’un théâtre. Cela m’a poussé à concevoir un programme de mises en scène à grande échelle, où acteurs, spectateurs, décors et urbanisme se fondent dans un même plan de réalité. Mon souhait : que le modèle embrasse la toile. »
Maxence Mathieu is interested in fictional spaces (dreams, mental projections, virtual realities, etc.) and how they are manifested in reality. His project for Art Public is built around the intention of instiling a sense of doubt in city users, through the presence of windows displaying a notice to the public suggesting that any event taking place in the public space during the exhibition could potentially be a work of art. At the same time, an undisclosed script calls for trivial actions performed by actors to take place in various parts of Bouillon throughout the event, without it ever being specified that these are comedy sketches. The project’s origins lie in observation of the town: « My preparatory visits catalysed my imagination of Bouillon, » explains Maxence Mathieu. « Its steep-sided topography and plunging views are reminiscent of the rows of seats in a theatre. This prompted me to conceive a programme of large-scale productions, where actors, spectators, sets and urban planning all merge into a single plane of reality. My wish is that the model will embrace the canvas. »
Maxence Mathieu heeft belangstelling voor fictieve ruimtes (dromen, geestelijke projecties, virtuele realiteiten, enz.) en voor hoe ze zich in de werkelijkheid manifesteren. In zijn project voor Art Public wil hij bij de stadsgebruiker twijfel zaaien door middel van ramen met daarop een bericht aan de bevolking, waarin wordt gesuggereerd dat elk evenement dat tijdens de tentoonstelling in de openbare ruimte plaatsvindt, potentieel een kunstwerk zou kunnen zijn. Parallel daaraan voorziet een geheimgehouden scenario dat gedurende het hele evenement op verschillende plekken in Bouillon onopvallende acties door acteurs zullen plaatsvinden, zonder ooit expliciet te vermelden dat alles gespeeld is. Dit project ontstond vanuit de observatie van de stad: “Mijn voorbereidende bezoeken hebben mijn verbeelding over Bouillon aangewakkerd”, legt Maxence Mathieu uit. Het steile landschap met de indrukwekkende vergezichten doet denken aan de trappen van een theater. Dit bracht mij ertoe een programma te ontwerpen met grootschalige ensceneringen, waarin acteurs, toeschouwers, decors en het straatbeeld één worden. Ik wens dat het model het doek kust.”
